The End and the Beginning
by Wisława Szymborska

After every war
someone has to clean up.
Things won't
straighten themselves up, after all.

Someone has to push the rubble
to the sides of the road,
so the corpse-filled wagons
can pass.

Someone has to get mired
in scum and ashes,
sofa springs,
splintered glass,
and bloody rags.

Someone must drag in a girder
to prop up a wall,
Someone must glaze a window,
rehang a door.

Photogenic it’s not,
and takes years.
All the cameras have left
for another war.

We’ll need bridges back
and new railway stations.
Sleeves will go ragged
from rolling them up.

Someone, broom in hand,
still recalls how it was.
Someone else listens
and nods with unsevered head.
But already there are those nearby
starting to mill about
who will find it dull.

From out of the bushes
sometimes someone still unearths
rusted-out arguments
and carries them to the garbage pile.

Those who knew
what was going on here
must make way to
those who know little.
And less than little.
And finally as little as nothing.

In the grass which has overgrown
causes and effects,
someone must be stretched out
blade of grass in his mouth
gazing at the clouds.

More on Jim Burke

ezs note:  This morning we attended the funeral of Jim Burke III. It was after a night of little rest, my thoughts being with this kind man, whose death was much too soon... much too soon.

I recently read an article in The Cenacle, where Jim wrote an article opposing the death penalty.  I was quite impressed with it.

As it turns out, Jim's thirtieth letter also turned out to be his last.  Because of the very kind permission of Ray Soulard, I have excerpted a portion of Jim's letter.

Peace and love, Jim.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, the death penalty is not, I repeat is not, a deterrent.  The very fact that murders in this country occur on a daily basis proves  that use of the death penalty is based on the revenge motive, and this also depends on the time and place of the crime and the trial.  The execution of citizens  by the states in this country is used to cover up the failure of our society as a whole to educate people equally and give all people to better themselves.  When hopelessness and despair set in, the recidivism rate of prisoners increases correspondingly, from the upper to the middle to the lower socio-economic strata.  Figures from the U.S.  Department of Justice have confirmed this data as recently as 2009.  The politicians in this country, as well as the Supreme Court, have become embarrassed and frustrated about their inability to stop the violence and so-called capital crimes.  Their solution has been to put the convicted to death as cleanly as they think is possible, by lethal injection in most cases.

I hope I live to see the day when our culture will transcend revenge, and rise above hate.  Peace and love for all humanity would enable us to realize our potential, which is God-like.  John Lennon had it right after all. IMAGINE!

Peace

Then all that has divided us will merge
And then compassion will be wedded to power
And then softness will come to a world that is harsh and unkind
And then both men and women will be gentle
And then both women and men will be strong
And then no person will be subject to another's will
And then all will be rich and free and varied
And then the greed of some will give way to the needs of many
And then all will share equally in the earth's abundance
And then all will care for the sick and the weak and the old
And then all will nourish the young
And then all will cherish life's creatures
And then all will live in harmony with each other and with the earth
And everywhere will be called Eden, once again.

Peace

At different states of our lives, the signs of love may vary: dependence, attraction, contentment, worry, loyalty, grief, but at the heart, the source is always the same.  Human beings have the rare capacity to connect with each other, against all odds.

Soren Kierkegaard

Peace

If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace.

John Lennon

Peace

“What is objectionable, what is dangerous about extremists is not that they are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say about their cause, but what they say about their opponents."  John F Kennedy

Peace

One of the sanest, surest, and most generous joys of life comes from being happy over the good fortune of others.

“I keep the telephone of my mind open to peace, harmony, health, love and abundance. Then whenever doubt, anxiety, or fear try to call me, they keep getting a busy signal and soon they’ll forget my number.” – Edith Armstrong

Peace

We live in fear. I’m very scared ... The authorities don’t do anything. If they did, we would not be living this situation. The police always patrol the same place, not where things are happening. I want them to do something so we can live in peace..SOURCE: AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL 2011-10-08 14:45:00

Peace

I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it.
Dwight D. Eisenhower

ezs note:  Isn't it time - in fact, long past time - for police officers to act responsibly and courteously toward transgender people? They can go act like dumbass dinosaurs at home, but once on the job, their failure to treat ALL people with dignity should be fired!!!

ezs note- Once again, please read the document written by WPATH.  Yes, it's long, but very important.

It's voting time again...

Yep, it's that time again.  Just one month to go until Election Day.  Now, as some of you may be aware, I'm a Democrat (strong lefty leaning), but that's beside the point.  In my old state Senatorial district, there was a guy running, who was a Democrat.  He also hated transgender folk (oh, and gays, lesbians, and bisexuals).  Normally, I'd vote for a Democrat, but not this joker.

My point is this:  although it would be folly to vote for a single issue, it would be proper to put that issue very high in your consideration.  Once again, this is your life and dignity at stake.  Please consider it as such.

Oh, and one more thing:  If you're not certain whether you've registered, get off your rump and register! Then vote!

Peace

Every goal, every action, every thought, every feeling one experiences, whether it be consciously or unconsciously known, is an attempt to increase one's level of peace of mind.

Many thanks to Hiwatari Saki

As many of you who read this blog know, I also enjoy the reading of manga.  Like other media, there's some which is fair, some good, some very good - but there are the very few which are truly stellar.  One such manga is Global Garden.  Wow.

I won't disclose too much to you, except the overarching theme of peace.  I decided to give an occasional thought to peace. It's too important not to.

Once again, thank you, Hiwatari Saki!

WPATH Standards of Care (www.wpath.org)

ezs note:  I know it's long, but this document is extremely important.  Transgenders, parents, teachers, counselors and friends/acquaintances- all will benefit from this.

Human pappilomavirus (HPV)

Recently I saw a short study on HPV.  It was surprising, to say the least.  Studies show that, among sexually active females, 80 percent come down with HPV.  As far as I can tell, there is no related study among transgender persons, M to F or F to M.  However, there would some items that would be wise:

1.  If you are active sexually, or thinking about it, go to a doctor first.  Be frank about it.  Follow her/his advice.

2.  If you are raising a transgender child, (and, yes, there are those) talk to the doctor about what advice you should give her/him.  Ask what stages you should go through as she/he grows up.

3.  If you or your partner already has HPV, ask what medication and timing will prevent it.

ezs note:  Despite what "experts" tell you, this is the word  of eminent doctors, physicians, and psychiatrists.  In a few words, you ain't crazy.  To pursue this, the words are a bit scholarly for the layperson, but it's well worth it.
