In the last 24 hours, Donald Trump has made several public statements, particularly concerning the ongoing war in Ukraine and the upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. During a virtual meeting with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump stated that Russia would face "very severe consequences" if Putin did not agree to end the war. He also reportedly told European leaders that he would not negotiate Ukrainian territory during his meeting with Putin.
However, Trump's past statements on the matter have been inconsistent, according to Wendy Sherman, a former deputy secretary of state under three Democratic presidents. She noted that he has previously vacillated between supporting Ukraine and aligning more with Russia and Putin. NPR reports that Putin's approach to the meeting may be tailored to Trump's transactional foreign policy style and desire for "wins".
