ezs note:  I don't know... maybe it's just me, with transgender stories entering my brain daily, but isn't it possible that these 'heartrending' stories are just a tad bit, *ahem*, melodramatic?  Y'know, just a bit?  Especially when you consider that Christine Jorgensen had her sex reassignment surgery in 1951!!!  Just a thought...
