YOU CAN DO IT TOO!

Recently, I was watching C-SPAN, when the announcer said that the next caller was from my town.  Wow, I said, that's great.

Now it gets really spooky.

The caller was not only from my town, but from my building! One floor up! We said hi and how are you whenever we saw each other.  (By the way, the town we live in is quite sizable - about 63,000)

The point is this:  The man I know is not rich.  He is not famous.  He lives in a subsidized apartment.  But he knows how to make himself HEARD.  And so he did, quite eloquently, I might add.

Now I am asking to make yourself heard.  E-mail or snailmail your Congressperson.  If an issue comes up that is dear to your heart, call your TV or radio station   If your Congresspersson has a town hall meeting, show up and SPEAK UP.

As many of you know, the issue that is near and dear to my heart is FULL marriage rights to those who seek them, whether heterosexual, gay, lesbian, or transgender.  I hope you support these too.  But without a vote and a voice, these opinions become almost meaningless.  Don't let that happen to you.

Makin' a difference!

I hear it often.  To be honest, far too often. I hear people say, "Well what can we do?  That's politics for ya."

But it's not true.

A few days ago, Rep. John Kavanagh, village idiot, was about to propose a bill to the Arizona legislature.  He said his withdrawal was due to a typographical error.  Yeah, right.  More likely it was due to the appalling (and amazing) stupidity of its author.

So,  what was this bill?  Let's say a transgender woman has to use the bathroom.  But our ever intrepid policeman is there to check her.  He asks for her to present her papers - her original birth certificate!!
Even if she had full surgery, that wouldn't satisfy Rep. Kavanagh.  But she has to go, so she pushes past the policeman and relieves herself.

She might not have realized it, but she's in big trouble now.  The policeman hauls her in, an unsympathetic judge hears the case, and throws her into jail for six months.

All because she had to pee.

Fortunately, this hasn't happened yet.  What happens is that when you e-write, bad legislation is more likely to be killed, and good legislation is likely to be passed.

Contact your legislator.  Tell him/her that freedom to marry is freedom for all.  Tell him that two systems of taxation - one for heterosexuals and another for homosexuals - is unfair, and possibly unconstitutional.

It ain't over 'til it's over!

I had an interesting experience last Tuesday.  I had a nurse (who is also a good friend) come by.  Well, I saw an opportunity there,  so I mentioned that there was a transgender girl in Colorado whose board of education had the, uh, "bright" idea that she could no longer use the girls bathroom.  She had to use the boys bathroom, the one in the teacher's lounge, or the nurse's room.

She is six years old.

My nurse was, of course, both disgusted and saddened.  I told her that there is something she could do. She could sign an e-petition on change.org. (You can do the same by clicking on it) A few minutes later, her petition was signed.

My point is this:  whether you sign an e-petition, or sign an e-letter to your representative, your signature is a start, not merely a finish.  How many people do you know who might be interested?  Who can tell?

(An aside:  I just got another person to sign - yay!)

E-sign for basic liberties for all, whether gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.  E-sign for the little girl who only wants to use the bathroom she has always used to relieve herself.

One more thing:  After you have signed, drop a quick note in the "comments" section.  It can be really quick - "I signed!" plus your name, if you wish, is perfect.  Thanks so much.

Now's the time to e-write!

If you have put this off for awhile, hey, I do understand.  I don't think there's a person in this world puts at least a few things off. (except for the anal do-it-right-nowers)  But... this is the time!!  We have a President who is compassionate to our cause.  We have a former President, who, however he might differ on other issues, agrees with the President on this one.

The time for same-sex marriage is near, very near.  If you e-mail now, you can put your name on record as being for it.

C'mon, folks.  Make history.

Didn't think it could happen, did you?

When Barack Obama sent a brief to the Supreme Court advocating same-sex marriages, it was an earth-shaking moment.  But when George W. Bush sent a letter advocating the same thing... whoa.

Think of that.  Barack Obama and George W. Bush and Joe Biden and Dick Cheney... extraordinarily powerful men with very different viewpoints... come to agreement on same-sex marriage.

It used to be that same-sex marriages were a matter of liberal vs. conservative.  No more.  Now they're a matter of liberal and conservative vs. troglodyte.

Don't let your representative be a troglodyte.  E-mail 'em.

It's time... once more!!!

Earlier this week, I was so excited having a brief meeting at a town hall with my representative John Larson.  I said my bit - but now it's your turn.

I can't tell you adequately how much this will mean to you.  All I can say to you is to give it a try.  If you are prevented by work or distance, send an e-mail.   Even if your representative is initially opposed to what you have to say, one more person - one more voter - may make him or her think twice.

As for me, I'm for freedom.  Freedom to meet.  Freedom to marry.  Freedom to walk the streets unaccosted. Freedom to share a dinner without being kicked out.  Freedom to make love without the police ramming down your door. Freedom to visit your sick partner.  Freedom to say a final farewell.

This is what gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender deserve.

This is what we should demand.
